Refugee Population in Tanzania

  • Since 1993 large numbers of Refugees have been living in camps in Western Tanzania
  • Many people fled their own country when armed conflict and unrest broke out in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda
  • Approximately ten camps are run by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) looking after over 400, 000 refugees - the numbers of which appear to be growing
  • It is estimated that just over 300, 000 refugees are Burundian
  • Many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) are also involved with helping at the camps along with the Tanzanian Government who supply officials and police etc. to help run the camps
