 Road Traffic Accidents

Personal Safety

Personal safety at a crash site

Always think about your own safety...

Safety

  • Personal safety is paramount - important equipment required includes:-

    i)   Wear your high visibility clothing and helmet appropriately labelled

ii)  Make sure all your vehicle is appropriately serviced and visible

iii)  Take gloves with you- (both heavy duty and medical)

iv)  Wear eye protection at all times

    v)  Protective clothing / respiratory apparatus for chemical hazards

    vi) Fire Extinguisher

REMEMBER...

  • Drive cautiously when responding to Road Traffic Accidents
  • Slow on the approach to the accident
  • Look out for debris, glass and casualities on the road
  • If you are first on the scene and your car is appropriately marked, park defensively in the 'fend off position' to protect the scene
  • If your vehicle has limited rear lighting consider parking on the side of the road with hazards on and lights flashing to alert on coming traffic
  • If other emergency services are in attendance drive past the incident and park safely on the side of the road
  • At night vehicles in the 'fend off position' should be appropriately illuminated without blinding on coming traffic
  • Exit vehicles on the safe side
  • Be aware and alert of the dangers of fast on-coming traffic
  • Wear your high visibility clothing and leave your emergency lights on where necessary, but remember - car batteries don't last forever
  • Stay within the controlled safety area and make sure it is safe to approach the scene
  • Ask the police to assist with traffic control if you are concerned
  • Be aware of the changing nature of dangers with time

Responding to emergency calls can be extremely dangerous - for all the emergency services...
